The
war memorial to the dead of BI in the two world wars has recently
appeared at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire,
UK. Its whereabouts during the last few decades and how it
came to re-appear at the military memorial site are, for the
moment, a mystery. It is believed the tablet was originally
in the BI office at 122 Leadenhall Street, London and later
at BI's office at One Aldgate, London.
The
tablet is a fine, probably bronze, casting, emblazoned with
lions, BI's Britannia and Lion badge, the BI house flag and enamelled
panels with anchor and wave motifs. It names 230 people in
all, 103 of the First World War and 127 of the Second World War,
including two women who were stewardesses in Domala. In the transcribed
list below, the colours have no significance other than to differentiate
between the two wars - the centre three columns containing those
of the 1914-1918 conflict and the outer columns 1939-1945. With
one or two exceptions the names listed for World War II coincide
with the of Roll of Honour given in the book Valiant Voyaging.
