1856
Calcutta & Burmah Steam Navigation Co Ltd
Calcutta & Burmah SN was the forerunner of British In dia Steam Navigation Co. It was incorporated in England on September 29, 1856 and subsequently changed its name to British India SN on December 5, 1862. This badge, copied from a piece of company crockery, is the only known surviving representation of a C&BSN device.

1881
Queensland Steam Shipping Company
Some doubt has arisen over the design of the QSS house flag. The company was is existence for only a short period and records are difficult to find. From information received (see the Logbook on this site for March 15, 2010) it appears that the plain rectangular flag with reversed BI saltire colours is the correct version, rather than the burgee shape (inset) which was previously displayed here.

1895
Ceylon Steamship Company
"On the coast of Ceylon is a small, but well regulated, service of local steamers, known as the Ceylon Steamship Company. The Prince Arthur of 103 tons and 45 HP, was succeeded by the Lady Gordon of 513 tons, joined in 1891 by the Lady Havelock of 607 tons. Fate and senility having disposed of these three, Messrs Walker have lately replaced them with two new vessels. Though small, they are excellently appointed and keep up a regular service around the island." (Source: "The Old Country Trade of the East Indies" by W.H.Coates, Cornmarket Press Ltd., London. 1969.) (Note: Part of the text of this book reveals that the original would have been published about 1910.)
