DON BRABEN
Don Braben was
born in Wallasey, Merseyside in 1937 and from an early age was interested
in ships. Choosing a career in art instead of the sea Don taught in
UK, Nigeria, Zambia, and Canada before emigrating to Australia where
he lectured in art at Griffith University, Brisbane until retirement
in 1997.

Ships
have always been a favourite subject and his prizewinning watercolours
have been exhibited in many countries both in solo and group exhibitions.

Don
is a foundation member of the Australian Society of Marine Artists
and a member of the International Society of Marine Painters, his
work has been exhibited at the Royal Societyof Marine Artists, UK
and the Mystic Marine International, USA. He prefers to capture contemporay
maritime activity where possible and has been artist-in-residence
aboard CSIRO Oceanographic Reseach Vessel FRANKLIN, the AMSA lighthouse
tender vessel CAPE GRAFTON and Royal Australian Navy Hydrographic
ship HMAS LEEUWIN recording the ships and crews at work.

Solo
exhibitions of Don's marine art often take a theme, paintings depicting
the ports of Brisbane and Kobe were shown in Japan and Australia;
ships serving New Caledonia featured in an exhibition in Noumea. Don's
work is in many shipping company collections including, Wallenius-Wilhelmsen
Line, Blue Star Line, Sofrana Unilines, Adsteam Marine, CSIRO, AMSA,
Fed Nav. Port Philip Pilots, Torres Straits Pilots etc as well, as
many seafarers personal collections.
